About Food Safety Legends

Food Safety Legends Pty Ltd is a South African company, founded in 2024, that makes Food Safety Legends: a board game that turns food safety training into food safety culture. Food businesses use it for refresher training, inductions, toolbox talks, knowledge checks and Food Safety Week events.

Why we built the game

For many people, food safety is seen as a regulatory necessity: a tedious task handled by someone with a clipboard, pointing out failures. Yet food safety is hard work, and it protects public health and the trust customers place in food businesses. That perception gap is why Food Safety Legends exists.

We set out to shift the conversation from compliance to a dynamic, interactive experience: a tool that gives food safety managers a way to keep the conversation going, breaks down barriers between roles, and brings teams together. Topics that are not discussed regularly fade from people's minds. A game keeps them at the front.

How the game works

Players race around a food production facility. Pitfall cards bring real hazards and their consequences, Power-Up cards are the corrective actions, and quiz rounds test what people know. Because players discuss and debate each scenario, they meet issues they may not have considered before and learn to solve them together. Full rules are on the how to play page.

What Food Safety Legends is, and is not

• It is a hands-on learning and engagement tool for food handlers, supervisors and managers.
• It is not accredited training and does not issue certificates. It reinforces accredited courses such as R638 food handler and HACCP training.
