Food retailers use Food Safety Legends to run short, consistent food safety refresher sessions in-store. The board game covers hygiene, cross-contamination, allergens and temperature control in a format that deli, bakery, butchery and front-end staff can play together, and SPAR uses it to support its food safety culture mission.

Food safety challenges in retail

  • Many departments, one standard: each fresh department has its own risks, but customers judge the whole store.
  • Store-to-store consistency: franchise and multi-store groups need every branch trained the same way.
  • Allergens and labelling: in-store prepared food makes allergen awareness critical at the counter.
  • Busy trading hours: training has to fit into quiet periods and shift changes.

Ways stores run it

Department huddles

A 10-minute card discussion at the start of a shift in the deli, bakery or butchery.

Store food safety day

A full game with mixed departments, ideal for World Food Safety Day or a regional Quality Week.

New-starter training

Every new team member plays a session in their first week. See induction training.

Store vs store challenge

Groups and franchises can run a regional tournament to build pride in food safety.

Buying for a group of stores

Single stores pay R1 800 per game. Groups ordering 3 or more pay R1 500 each, and we can quote for branded editions and regional roll-outs. See bulk and branded orders.

“At SPAR, our Food Safety mission is to be the leaders in the South African food retail industry in food safety culture. Food Safety Legends has bolstered this mission by aligning its educational goals with our core values. It is a great tool to not only teach the principles of safe food handling and hygiene, but also foster social interaction, strengthen relationships and encourage teamwork, together building a stronger food safety culture for your brand.”

Common questions

Is the game suitable for cashiers and packers, not just deli staff?

Yes. Anyone who handles food, packaging or food-contact surfaces benefits, and mixing departments improves the discussion.

How long does a session take?

A full game takes 30–60 minutes; a department huddle with a few cards takes about 10 minutes.

Is it accredited training?

No. It reinforces accredited food handler training and supports your culture programme. It does not issue certificates.
